Program Communities

If you used an Organization in Blackboard, you may be interested in a creating a Program Community in Canvas.

What is a Program Community?
A Program Community is a sub-account that is created in Canvas for a program team. Within your Program Community, you can assign Community Admins. These admins will have access to creating new courses within the Program Community, manually enrolling faculty and/or students, and maintaining their program’s sub-account.

Why would I use a Program Community?
Within your Program Community, multiple courses can be created, and each will have separate enrolment. You may wish to create a course that is a Faculty Community Hub. Another option is to have a Final Year – Community Hub for your students in the last year of their program, where you can share job posting information, industry events, or other relevant resources.

A common use case is to use a Placement Hub course for students going on placement. Students may need access to documents or may be required to submit documentation before starting their placement. Creating a Placement Hub course within your Program Community is an effective way to share necessary information and forms, have students complete required training, and track documentation all in one course.

How do I get a Program Community?
Email cllae@loyalistcollege.com for more information on getting your Program Community sub-account created.

Once a Program Community has been added, the designated Administrator of this community will notice an additional tab in their Global Navigation called Admin.  They will be able to access their Program Community through the Admin tab under the Program Community.

Once in their Program Community sub-account, Admins will have the ability to add a Community Hub or another course needed through the +Course button.  Each of these courses will automatically include a standard template that you can build off and customize with your own resources.

You can manually enroll faculty and/or students into hub courses using the instructions found below:

1) Click on the People tab in your course menu

There is another option for enrolling students in your community hub courses.

Students can self-enroll in a course if you set-up a self-enroll link.  Instructions for this set-up are included here.

Regardless of how students are added to your hub (either through self-enroll or manual enrolment), they will be able to access your community hub from their Dashboard in the same spot that they access all other courses.

There is Placement Training module that can be sent to you to insert into your Placement Course.  This module contains common workplace/placement trainings.  As the Admin of a sub-account, you can provide students with access to these trainings.  You can contact cllae@loyalistcollege.com to send this training module with you.

Check out this quick video tutorial which will direct you on where to find the content sent to you, and how you can add it to your hub course.

Please note: the WHMIS training module and other mandatory training content is meant to be an introduction for students; this module is not a replacement for any required onsite training that is specific to placement sites.  It is mandatory that students still complete site-specific WHMIS training where required.
