To enable Respondus Lockdown Browser on a test in Blackboard, you must first create and deploy the test in Blackboard. For information on how to create and deploy tests in Blackboard click on the following link, Creating Tests in Blackboard.
Once you have created your test in Blackboard, follow the steps below to enable Respondus Lockdown Browser:
Step 1. Click on Course tools (located on the control panel under the course menu)
Step 2. Select “Respondus Lockdown Browser”
Step 3. You will be presented with a list of available tests in your course. Locate the test that you would like to enable respondus lockdown browser on, and click the drop down arrow located to the left of the test name.
Step 4. Click Settings
Step 5. Click “Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam”
Step 6. Select additional settings and then – allow students to take the exam with an IPad as well as allow students to use Lockdown Browser for Chromebook (student instructions are available in the Taking a Test section)
Step 7. Select the appropriate additional settings
Step 8. In addition to Lockdown Browser, you can also enable MONITOR. Monitor uses a webcam to record student exam sessions and acts as a powerful deterrent to cheating. To enable monitor (and require that students MUST take the test in front of a webcam), click “require respondus monitor for this test”.
If you do not want students to have to take the test using a webcam, then leave this setting set to “Don’t require respondus monitor for this test”. Please note that Loyalist college does not provide students with webcams; therefore, students will have to source a personal webcam.
For additional information regarding Respondus Lockdown with Monitor please contact the Centre for Advancement of Teaching and Learning
Step 9. Click “Save and Close”
Step 10. You will then be transferred back to the Respondus Lockdown Browser Dashboard. From there, you will now see that your test requires lockdown browser and/or monitor.
Step 11. To confirm the setting, navigate to the content area in your course where you have deployed your test (ie. where students will access the test in your course). You should see that the title of the test has been renamed to include “-Requires Lockdown Browser”
NOTE: If you review the test options and see that a password has been added to the settings, DO NOT REMOVE. This password is set by LockDown Browser and if removed it will disable the test and cause an error for students.
Do not share this password with students as it will allow them to bypass LockDown and Monitor
If students indicate that they received a message suggesting that the instructor needs to fix something, you will need to review the Respondus settings by selecting the Respondus Lockdown options in the course tools. If you see an error you will need to select the Fix It button. This will reset the test/exam and allow students access.
The following video also outlines how to set up your test to require Respondus Lockdown Browser.
