Open Educational Resources

What Are Open Educational Resources?

Open educational resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials that fall under flexible, open licensing that are either in the public domain or have been released under a license that allows them to be freely used, changed, or shared with others. These resources are available in a variety of formats such as photos, videos, open textbooks, courses, and journals and are available for anyone to use at no cost.

Thinking about Open Resources and Materials? Consider the following:

  1. How will open resources improve my course/community/industry?
  2. What types and formats of OER make sense for this course and the delivery model?
  3. Is there an open textbook and/or other resources that already exists?
  4. Are their national, provincial, or local contexts that need to be incorporated?
  5. If so, what changes would you need to make to the resource?
  6. Where will the OER be stored? Third party platform (Pressbooks/H5P) or institutional repository (one drive, Studio, SharePoint)
  7. How will participants access the modules/materials/course? (Website, LMS, other)
  8. What aspects of OER am I familiar with?
  9. What aspects am I the lease comfortable with?
  10. What training, resources and/or support would I require?
