H5P

What is H5P?

H5P is a web based software that makes it easy to transform your lesson materials into interactive and engaging remote learning experiences for your students. Engage students with drag & drop activities, flashcards, embedded quizzes, interactive timelines, accordion and collage content presentations, and many other interactions.

eCampusOntario has worked with the Wilfrid Laurier University Library team to provide eCampusOntario H5P Studio for all Ontario Colleges to implement into their curriculum free of charge.

What is H5P eCampusOntario Studio?

H5P Studio is an online platform developed as part of eCampusOntario’s set of Open Publishing Tools. It’s a one-stop shop to create, share, and discover H5P interactive content from other content authors and institutions. Interactive content created through eCampusOntario H5P Studio will be hosted on the platform so it can be quickly shared or modified.

Important Notes:

If you are not aware of Creative Commons Licensing, or need a refresher, click here to access the quick reference guide. This will ensure you know how you can use and report individual interactions.

We strongly recommend that you preview any content you intend to share with students/embed in your course to ensure it meets your expectation, including correct and incorrect feedback.

Step 1: On your dashboard, select Catalogue.

Step 2: Choose a subject area.

Step 3: Click on the title of the interaction to open it.

Step 4: Click on Reuse.

Why do we recommend Reuse rather than Embed?

We recommend you use reuse as this ensures that any updates the original author does to the interaction do not transfer automatically to the interaction in your course.

Reminder if you make changes to a SA (Share Alike) licensed interaction, you are required to reshare.

When you have completed creating your interaction and wish to add it to your course in Canvas:

Step 1: In your H5P student interaction, click on Embed.

Step 2: Right click and copy the embed code (note this ensures you copy the entire code and not just what you see in the field). At this time, changing the size will not change the way your interaction displays in your course so leave the default.

Step 3: Navigate to the spot in your course where you want to add your interaction. Click on the embed icon.

Step 4: Right click and paste in your embed code and click Save.

Step 5: Click on Save

Can I keep my H5P interaction private?

Yes, by default your interaction will be a Work in Progress which means it is private to you only.

Can I use H5P for graded assessments?

Essentially, no. You can have the H5P interaction generate a score so the student is aware of their performance, however, the score will not report to the grade centre in the LMS.

How are Single Choice, Multiple Choice and Summary different? Which one should I use?

Essentially these three interactions are very similar and have the same functionality, they can be used for a multiple-choice interactions. The difference is in how they look. We suggest creating one of each and choosing the look you like best.

Can I import my existing PowerPoint into a Course Presentation interaction?

No, you need to build your course presentation from scratch using the text, image boxes and any media you wish to add. Although this is a time investment up front, you will have an interactive presentation that allows you to use flexibly in your teaching.

Can I embed an interaction into my existing PowerPoint?

No, you cannot (at this time this functionality is not available).

Can I collaborate and/or share with others when developing an interaction?

Yes, you can collaborate with others if they have an active H5P Studio account. Search for them in the Collaborator section of the H5P editor.

If I update my interaction in H5P Studio does it automatically update in the LMS or do I have to re-add it?

Yes, your interaction in the LMS will be updated automatically, you do not need to re-add it.
